![]() Even in the face of adversity, optimists hang on to the slightest ray of hope for a favorable outcome. Well adjusted, happy and always looking at the bigger, better picture - optimists are often touted as the best way to be. Doomsday preppers and constant naysayers are typical members of this group. Regardless of the situation, such individuals are almost always at odds with something, earning the reputation of being the ones who are hardest to please. Investigators and scientific professionals can often represent this group of pessimists who assume the burden of proof on their shoulders.Īlternately, a fatalist is someone who paints a dark picture of everything without any rhyme or reason. Pessimists often frustrate the optimists, who are the risk takers, but they are also the ones who can keep significantly unrealistic optimism in check. Being a pessimist has both advantages and disadvantages. Pessimists generally don’t take anything at face value till they scrutinize it on a micro level. By default, an individual who is usually skeptical and doubting is a pessimist - someone who needs proof to decide whether they’re on board or not. People generally confuse pessimism with fatalism. Generally, a pessimist is seen as a negative person who always fears the worst, but that’s not entirely true. ![]() Are Pessimists Always All Gloom And Doom? In this article, what I hope to accomplish is to be able to define and clear any preconceived notions one may have by presenting these personality types. In between the 2 ends of the outlook spectrum, there are realists who share similar, yet very different personality traits. The debate of whether the glass is half full or half empty goes a deeper than sorting people into two groups - optimists and pessimists, because human behavior is complex. Life is not black and white - it is more shades of gray. But here’s the question - are people always so black and white? In life, you may have come across some happy-go-lucky individuals who are painfully optimistic, looking at the world through their rose-colored glasses and then there are those who tend to look at the negative aspect of things.
